Real Estate Advisory Board

The Real Estate Advisory Board at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business consists of distinguished members of the business community invited to support the W. P. Carey Center for Real Estate and Finance.

Advisory board members lend expertise on curriculum, training, and pragmatic research needs. Board members also share foundational real estate knowledge as guest speakers in classes and aid in fundraising for educational programs. By dedicating their time and resources, they help us build up the next generation of real estate leaders. 

Advisory Board

Managing Partner, Okland Capital

Blake Bunker is Managing Partner at Okland Capital, where he leads the firm’s investment, underwriting, financing, and development activities. Mr. Bunker co-founded Okland Capital in 2017, leveraging the resources and legacy of the Okland Family and Okland Construction to build a platform focused on strategic real estate investment and development across a range of asset classes. Throughout his career, Mr. Bunker has overseen the acquisition, entitlement, and development of more than 3 million square feet of real estate and over 1,000 units, including multifamily, office, medical office, retail, hotel, and mixed-use projects. He was also instrumental in the creation and development of Gilbert Memorial Park Cemetery & Funeral Home, a first-of-its-kind project in the region.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Bunker worked at Shea Properties in California, where he led development, acquisition, disposition, and underwriting efforts for the company’s multifamily and mixed-use portfolio. During this time, he also served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, teaching in the Master of Real Estate Development Program with a focus on multifamily development. Mr. Bunker began his professional journey at PwC in public accounting, where he earned his CPA license. He brings two decades of real estate experience and has worked closely with municipalities on zoning, entitlement, and compliance matters, and has negotiated numerous Public-Private Partnerships and development agreements.

Mr. Bunker earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Brigham Young University and his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He currently resides with his family in Gilbert, Arizona.

President & CEO, Cowley Companies

Mike Cowley is the president of Cowley Companies, Inc., a family real estate business based in Phoenix. Mr. Cowley oversees the extensive Cowley Companies real estate portfolio and has participated in real estate transactions that cumulatively exceed $5 billion. He is also a principal of Cowley Norberg Investments (CNI), which acts as a real estate-based investment vehicle for qualified investors. His current passion is adaptively reusing historic warehouses as unique office space near downtown Phoenix.  Mike looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experience as a new member of the W.P. Carey Master of Real Estate Development Board. 

Mike holds a degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Utah. He is a member of Greater Phoenix Leadership serving as Co-Chair for the Economy Task Force Committee, in addition to serving on the Teach for America Regional Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Board of The Cowley Family Foundation. Previous commitments include President of the Maricopa Health Foundation Board, commissioner on the Maricopa County Planning & Zoning Committee and Chairman of the Board for the Maricopa County Special Health Care District.

Chairman & CEO, Sunbelt Holdings

John joined Sunbelt Holdings in 1982, became President in 1990, and assumed the role of Chairman of the Board in 2019. John’s background in asset management, development and real estate investment provides a solid foundation of knowledge and experience in the real estate field. Under John’s direction Sunbelt has become a dominant force, in both community affairs and real estate activities.  

John’s prior experience included The Koll Company in asset management and development from 1980-1982 and Coldwell Banker in asset management and sales from 1978-1980. FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks, appointed John Graham as their newest member of their Board of Directors in August 2020. 

 

Principal, Head of Originations, Thorofare Capital

Felix M. Gutnikov is a Principal at Thorofare Capital and serves as the Head of Originations. Felix is also a shareholder of Callodine Thorofare LLC, a joint venture between Boston-based asset management platform Callodine Group and Los Angeles-based registered investment adviser Thorofare Holdings LLC. He joined Thorofare Capital in January 2012, sits as a voting member on the Investment Committee for the firm’s discretionary fund series as well as its institutional joint ventures and separate accounts. Felix has over 15 years of Commercial Real Estate industry experience and over $4 billion of financing transactions closed across nine investment vehicles. Felix plays a primary role in the sourcing, structuring, and pricing of new loan originations from the firm’s Los Angeles office, and directs capital markets syndications through co-lending, participations, and senior/subordinate arrangements. Felix is a graduate of the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, for which he currently serves on the Dean's Council and Real Estate Advisory Board at the W. P. Carey School.

President, Harvard Investments

Craig Krumwiede is the president of Harvard Investments, a Scottsdale based real estate development firm which specializes in diverse master planned residential communities.  President since 1994, Krumwiede leads the company’s development and investment activities and is responsible for the implementation of the general investment strategy for the company. Harvard is the U.S. development and investment arm of The Hill Companies, a privately held company founded in 1903. 

Krumwiede actively oversees the acquisition, development and sale of the company’s real estate holdings in Arizona and Texas. Harvard’s product ranges from exclusive golf course communities to projects centered around single family production housing.  Harvard’s expertise includes a thorough approach to conceptualizing, designing, creating and developing each individual community with specific attention to the surrounding area needs and with respect for the environment.  Over the years Mr. Krumwiede has developed solid working relationships with other developers, landowners, partners, home builder, engineers, brokers, national banks and lending institutions, politicians and lawyers.   

Talking Rock Ranch, a 3,600 acre private, master-planned golf course community located in Prescott, Arizona, and a Harvard signature development, has received numerous accolades, including being recognized as the Detached Residential Project of the Year in 2008.  It is consistently ranked among the top 25 courses in Arizona by Gold Digest and Golf Week.   

Krumwiede holds a B.S. degree in accounting and a Juris Doctor degree from Arizona State University.  After graduation he joined Deloitte & Touche as a tax specialist.  He is a board member and Past President of the ASU Council for Design Excellence and a member of the Dean’ s Council of 100 for the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU.  He was is involved in the inception of the Master in Real Estate Development program at ASU and acts as a mentor to many of those students. 

Krumwiede is a Respondent to the Federal Reserve Beige Book.  He is also a founding member of Social Venture Partners Arizona, which funds and provides expertise to innovative non-profit organizations and creates educated philanthropists.

Founding Partner, WestHawk Capital, LLC

Gary is the founder and owner of WestHawk Capital, a platform incubator for emerging real estate managers, based in Phoenix, Arizona. WestHawk identifies attractive real estate strategies and partners with entrepreneurs to build scalable, long-term businesses. Companies on the platform include those focused on single-tenant triplenet and single-family rental markets. Prior to forming WestHawk Capital, Gary was a founding partner of ViaWest Group, a Phoenix-based commercial real estate investment and development firm where he led the capital markets activity from 2003 until early 2020. 

Gary earned a BA in Economics from Northwestern University and an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is active in the Arizona chapter of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), serves as the Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), Arizona Chapter, and is currently Chairman of a ULI national product council. He is fluent in Japanese and proficient in Spanish. 

Gary is passionate about improving education in Arizona. He spearheaded the effort to launch Project Destined -a real estate internship program for underserved communities – in Arizona, and he serves as chairman to the board of directors for Read Better Be Better. Gary lives in Phoenix with his wife Julie. They have two sons, Zachary and Matthew. 

CEO, UDLR Healthcare

Robert Milligan is a seasoned real estate investor and operator focused on healthcare real estate. He is currently the CEO and Managing partner of UDLR Healthcare, an investment management company focused in healthcare real estate founded with GI Partners in 2023. Prior to that, he served as the CFO of Healthcare Trust of America, a publicly traded REIT and the largest owner and operator of MOBs until its sale to Healthcare Realty Trust (NYSE: HR) in 2022. In this role, he oversaw all aspects of the company’s finance and corporate operations, investment activities, and property operations. Prior to HTA, he worked at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, focusing on healthcare and financial sponsors clients, and started his career at General Electric. His commitment to the healthcare sector is deep, stemming from a family of medical professionals.  

In addition to his professional experience, he was a founding board member for Revista Med and investor and advisory board member for several healthcare and educational organizations. 

Mr. Milligan holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance from Arizona State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business.

Head of Institutional Acquisitions, Mynd Investment Management

Leo proudly leads the high performing acquisitions team responsible for strategically and rapidly scaling the number of SFR assets on the tech-enabled platform across the country. He’s a devout advocate of diversity and inclusion workplace initiatives and passionate about scaling company culture. 

Leo is an accomplished real estate executive with over 18 years of diverse, dynamic, and demonstrated success in many facets and asset classes of real estate. Leo has spent the last 10 years in the SFR and proptech space. In his career, he has accumulated investment experience working for and with the largest private and publicly traded respected organizations in the sector.

President, Colliers

Gary Shaw serves as President and Designated Broker of Arcadia Management Group, a leading commercial real estate firm providing property management, facility management and tenant/capital improvement services in Phoenix and across the United States. 

In his role, Gary directs the strategy and vision for the leasing and management of more than 500 income-producing commercial real estate properties totaling approximately 50 million square feet of Arcadia-managed space in key growth markets across the U.S. He also provides direct oversight of Arcadia’s tenant/capital improvement services. In response to market demand, Gary launched a Construction Management Division in 2021. 

Drawing from his early career in computer technology and sales, Gary develops and deploys Arcadia strategies with a strong emphasis on property technology, using bestin-class software platforms and his own patented assets to streamline processes and maximize results. His expertise in Yardi accounting software, vendor management and facilities operations, in particular, allows Arcadia to add value through process efficiencies, tenant retention and operating expense savings. Combined with a team of 170 industry professionals – all dedicated to providing highly responsive customer service – Arcadia has built a reputation for delivering exceptional results without sacrificing human connection. 

As head of the Arcadia organization since 2008 and an Arcadia employee since 1998, Gary applies his expertise across multiple client profiles, from large-scale office, industrial and retail developments to niche lifestyle properties, and from single investors to large public institutions. 

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Programs from Arizona State University and is a licensed Real Estate Broker in the states of Arizona, California and Washington.

President/CEO and Founder, Invitation Homes

Dallas B. Tanner is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Invitation Homes, and a member of the company’s board of directors. As a founding member of Invitation Homes’ business, Mr. Tanner was at the forefront of creating the single-family rental industry. Since the founding of Invitation Homes in April 2012, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, as well as Interim President. Prior to the initial public offering of Invitation Homes in February 2017, he served on the boards of the company’s predecessor entities.  

Mr. Tanner has nearly 20 years of real estate experience through the establishment of numerous real estate platforms. In 2005, he founded Treehouse Group, for which he privately sourced funds for platform investments, including single-family homes, multifamily properties, manufactured housing, residential land, bridge financing and property management. Mr. Tanner continues to represent Treehouse Group’s interest in Pathfinder Ventures, a Southwest-focused commercial real estate fund. In addition, he was a partner in a successful acquisition of First Scottsdale Bank of Arizona. Mr. Tanner serves on the HOPE Global Board of Advisors. He is actively involved in American Indian Services and served as a missionary in the Netherlands and Belgium. Mr. Tanner holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance and a master’s degree in Real Estate Development, both from Arizona State University. He and his family reside in Dallas, Texas. 

CEO/Founder, Land Advisors Organization

Since founding the company in 1987, Mr. Vogel has applied his unique knowledge in the areas of land economics, land use and market trends to become a trusted advisor and broker to a broad spectrum of clients including financial institutions, investors, homebuilders and master planned community developers. 

As Chief Executive Officer of the Land Advisors Organization, Mr. Vogel has led the expansion of the company into 26 markets across the United States. Over the past 34 years he has been involved in hundreds of transactions including several of the highest valued land transactions in the country. He has developed an extreme level of expertise in large scale community development and the representation of large land owners in unique structured transactions. 

Mr. Vogel received his B.S. in Real Estate from Arizona State University in 1985. Within the Urban Land Institute he is a Governor, past Trustee, past Chair of the Community Development Council (BlueFlight) and past ULI Foundation Board of Directors member.  Mr. Vogel focuses his philanthropic and civic involvement on the Arizona State University Foundation (as past Trustee, past Board member and currently Chairs the Arizona State University’s Real Estate Council’s Advisory Board).
